A guide to successfully reaching your goals

With 2021 on the Horizon let’s chat about setting and achieving goals.

I’ve been working in the industry for a long time and every year it's the same, people want to lose weight so they start exercising or up their routine and they eliminate everything “bad” from their diet, and they do it all at the same time. A few weeks go by, they let up on their diet, they start hitting snooze on their alarm clocks and the gym is left with the same die hards after a month or two.  I believe this can be avoided and changed with the correct plan in place.

1.Let’s start back at the beginning, what are you trying to change and why?

Until you can really answer the why part, and I mean go deeper than “I want to weigh x amount of weight by x date”, It is going to be really hard to identify just what needs to change and how to go about doing it as well as keeping yourself accountable.

2. When do you want to accomplish this goal?

Are there any events coming up that you are trying to get ready for?

If you leave it vague, that's exactly what it will stay, this vague “wish” of doing something that never gets completed. Be as specific as you possibly can be here.

3. What sacrifices + changes are you willing to commit to in order to reach “x” goal?

If you aren’t willing to change much than expect your goal to take a lot longer than you may want it to or the possibility it will never happen.  Maybe your goal needs to be adjusted in accordance to what you are willing to change or you need to be honest with yourself. Nothing happens without sacrifice and consistency, especially if your goals include losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle.

4. How many months, weeks or days do you have?

Once you’ve established the meat and potatoes now we can build a plan backwards.

What needs to happen monthly, weekly and daily to get there. I like to start big and then get more specific as we go. Once you have an outline for the month, then we can better determine what needs to happen weekly and daily to get there. Write this part down. If you don’t write it down somewhere the likelihood of you following through is much less.

5. Be open to change, and adjust as you go.

Once you have the timeline mapped out make sure you use it, reference + adjust as need be.

If Your weekly goal is not happening, then maybe you need to go back in and ask yourself 2 questions:

  • What isn’t working?

  • What can I adjust to make it more realistic for me to commit to?

6. Have multiple ways of checking in with yourself.

Photos, measurements, scale, daily mood + energy levels. The scale is not the only measure of success ( Peep the BLOG for an oldie but goodie about this specifically)
